When do I receive the Competition Resource Kit?
When you register for the competition, a resource kit will be sent to you that contains a DVD with a step-by-step guide to producing your entry. The DVD also contains productions tips, past entries, and a free copy of 'VIDEO PRODUCTION: a classroom survival guide'.
Do I have to choose my occupation from the list provided?
No, the list is a guide only. It is a good idea to choose the occupation that you find interesting. However, do an occupation that hasn't been done previously (check the Competition website for past winners).
What is the best type of camera to use?
There are a wide range of cameras available in today's market. It is recommended using a DV camera that acquires the footage on tape. Many of the hard drive and disk models produce inferior pictures and are difficult to edit. It is also important that the camera has a microphone input and headphones jack.
What other equipment do I need?
You will need a microphone that can be plugged into the camera for interview purposes, a set of headphones that allows the camera operator to monitor sound, a fairly good tripod, and a light, if possible.
What do I do if I don't have access to all this equipment?
Don't let that stop you, improvise, be creative and push the envelope!! Some of the best entries are done that way.
Can I use the top camera microphone for interviews?
Well, yes if you have to. You will, however, get a much better result if you use a hand held microphone plugged into the camera.
How long will it take to edit my entry clip?
This is impossible to answer because it largely depends on your footage and on what edit equipment you have use. A good rule of thumb - every minute of completed clip will take around 4 hours to edit. One thing for sure, every minute you spend planning will save you hours in editing!!
What editing software do I use?
There are many varieties of editing software available, but it's better to stick to the more common ones. It is also a good idea to use an editing program that you know you can get some help with, if you get stuck.
Does all the footage have to be original?
Yes, after all it is a video competition.
Can I use any music in my production?
Unfortunately, no. You must use music that is copyright free. To download copyright free music, click on the link on the Competition website.
I can't see the videos on this website ?
Simpy make sure your computer is up to date with respect to both Java and Flash plugins.
Can I get help if I need it?
Yes, we are only a phone call away. The Competition Hotline runs from 8am to 10pm EST. Hotline number is 02 9522 8855.
AND REMEMBER TO HAVE FUN!!
These resourses are made available to assist participants in the myfuture Student Video Competition. This section will be upgraded regularly throughout the competition.
